When you think of some of the best footballing goalkeepers of all time, a number of the same names probably spring to mind; Schmeichel, Banks, Shilton, Kahn, the list goes on. There is one prominent name missing from this list however – Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian stalwart has had a glittering career spanning 22 years to this point, and last weekend clocked up his 1,000th performance as a professional footballer. The feat was celebrated in typical Buffon fashion, with a clean sheet in a 2-0 win for the Italian national side against Albania.

To celebrate Buffon’s amazing achievement, we created this special content piece with the help of DAZN’s Serie A pundit Carsten Fuss.

In co-operation with the production team in our Munich office, Fuss delivers an assessment of how he has followed Buffon’s career from the very start. Amazingly, Carsten actually commentated on Buffon’s very first appearance in Serie A, for Parma in a 0-0 draw against A.C Milan in 1995, and has followed his career closely as he has developed into one of the greatest keepers of all time. Carsten also commentated on Buffon’s international debut against Russia in 1997.

Buffon has won a number of trophies throughout his fantastic career, including one World Cup, seven Serie A titles, three Italian Cups & one UEFA Europa League. The UEFA Champions League is the one trophy that has eluded Buffon thus far, but with Juventus having a terrific season and in the quarterfinals of the competition, this may finally be the year he ends that hoodoo. Here’s hoping that Buffon continues his illustrious playing career for a number of years to come!
